Pattern setting
The first line is the centreline.
The first line of a herringbone or chevron is the sightline you choose: the fireplace wall, the window wall, or the entry axis. Snap a centreline on that axis and dry-fit the key rows so the edge cuts balance left and right. The pattern is decided on that dry-fit, before a fastener or a trowel.
Sightline
Pick the wall the eye meets first. The field is squared to that line, not to the nearest jog.

Snap it and dry-fit so the edge cuts balance left and right. A drift toward one wall shows across the room.
Dry-fit
Confirm direction against millwork and plank borders, and lock the dye lot, before adhesive or a fastener.
Herringbone pieces on this floor are square-ended, typically 5 by 25 inches, set at 90°. The centreline is the tolerance: if the field walks toward one wall, the zigzag announces it. Chevron pieces are typically 5 by 25½ inches, with milled angled ends that meet in a continuous V. The peak line is the tolerance that shows from across the room.
Straight-plank borders at the same 3/4 inch thickness keep the height flush where a pattern field meets a hallway. Direction is confirmed against millwork before the dye lot is locked for shipping.
