Treads, risers, and nosings
A Toronto stair design is its own product, not a floor that happens to turn a corner. Treads, risers, and nosings are cut, radiused, and finished to the surrounding European white oak. A typical tread is 1.25 inch nominal. The package comes from one matched stain run, the same lot as the adjoining hallway or living room.

- Treads
- Full-depth European white oak, 1.25 inch nominal, matched to the field grade and the field stain. The tread is the piece that takes the step. It is not a ripped plank.
- Risers
- Painted, for contrast, or oak-matched, for a monolithic stair. Oak risers use the tread’s stain lot. Both options come from the same 3/4 inch European white oak family. The choice is the interior, not a second species.
- Nosings
- Bullnose or square-edge, overhanging the tread. Bullnose suits traditional houses in Forest Hill and Rosedale, and heritage houses in Cabbagetown and the Annex. Square-edge suits contemporary condos and lofts. Nosing profile is the detail most often left until installation day. Both profiles are milled from the same European white oak and finished with UV-cured aluminum oxide.
The UV-cured aluminum oxide on the tread is formulated for residential slip resistance under normal use. A runner or a grip strip is still common in a house with children or seniors. The base finish does not require one to meet ordinary residential use.
The matched run
Floors Toronto builds the stair package from the same stain lot as the adjoining hallway or living room, so the first riser does not read as a different batch. One lot across the floor and the stairs. The match is usually confirmed within one to two sample rounds.
