The cooler slab
A below-grade Toronto basement is a cooler slab, with more ambient moisture, on concrete that rejects nail-down solid strip. Floors Toronto specifies cross-ply birch engineered European white oak at 3/4 inch, glue-down, and only after the slab has been moisture-tested. Solid hardwood is not the below-grade floor.

Solid strip moves aggressively below grade. Concrete will not take a nail, so the solid install that a house uses upstairs does not exist on this slab. Industry guidance generally discourages solid strip below grade. Engineered is the hardwood path that survives the moisture.
Birch-core engineered oak at 3/4 inch, with a UV-cured aluminum oxide finish, restrains movement up to three times better than solid strip across that below-grade swing. Solid strip remains inappropriate even when the slab has heat in it.
Engineered, if the slab qualifies
Cross-ply birch European white oak, 3/4 inch, moisture-tested, then glued down. A failed reading means mitigation or dehumidification before anyone schedules adhesive.

Reacts to below-grade moisture. Cannot be nailed into the slab. Not the floor Floors Toronto specifies here.
Active water, efflorescence, or a flood-prone laundry means the slab does not qualify. Unfinished storage that puddles does not qualify until the water path is fixed. Below-grade does not mean any slab qualifies. The general comparison, above grade included, is engineered versus solid.
The glue-down assembly
Every below-grade glue-down starts with a concrete moisture probe, to the manufacturer’s limits. It is the same discipline used on Toronto condo towers. A failed reading means a mitigation membrane or a dehumidification plan before adhesive is scheduled. Glue-down adhesive fails on a damp basement slab.
Glue-down couples the 3/4 inch plank to the slab and is the usual feel in a basement rec room. Floating with an acoustic underlay is less common, and it shows up when the mitigation system demands it. That choice is made after the readings, not before them.
The probe is moisture testing and prep. The assembly is glue-down installation.
Radiant heat in a basement slab can take engineered oak when the surface-temperature limits and the moisture gates both clear. Solid strip stays inappropriate even with the heat on. Commissioning is the radiant heat guide. This page does not add a temperature the basement page has not stated.
Basement humidity
Hold a finished basement near 35–55% occupied RH. Summer can brush 60–70% without a dehumidifier, and that swells wood even with a birch core. Winter heat can fall toward 20–30%, and the seams shrink if the lower level is left dry. Document the dehumidifier setpoints at handoff. A buyer of a finished rec room needs the 35–55% target in writing when a Toronto August reaches 60–70% without mechanical cooling.
Straight plank in a basement family room is often 7½ or 9¼ inch, Grade AB or ABC, at 3/4 inch. Avoid 10¼ inch unless the HVAC and the moisture history are already stable. Finished basements with dehumidification, insulated walls, and no chronic efflorescence are the ones that qualify, after the probes pass.
Keep hardwood out of laundry splash and out of an unfinished utility room. A washer-pan failure sends water across the 3/4 inch oak. Glue-down 7½ or 9¼ inch belongs in the family room, after the probes, not in the wet zone.
