When oak is the wrong floor
A Toronto mudroom or laundry sees more standing water than any other room where hardwood is still a candidate. Melting snow and wet boots come straight off the driveway or the laneway. A laundry room adds the supply line and the appliance leak. Engineered oak works in many of these rooms. A moisture-resistant floor is sometimes the right floor instead.

Tile carries less water risk than hardwood in a high-exposure mudroom. That is why the floor here is sometimes tile at the immediate wet zone, and oak only past a reducer. The first few feet at the door take the snow, the salt, and the boots. Oak that starts at the threshold is oak in the water.
Standing water left for more than a few hours can begin to cup engineered hardwood. Extract a spill within roughly two hours when that is possible. The limit is the water, not the foot traffic.
Grade ABC hides boot and equipment scuffs better than a uniform Grade AB. Scratch resistance does not change. Both grades use the same UV-cured aluminum oxide finish.

If oak stays, it starts past the reducer, not in the puddle. A threshold strip marks the height change off an exterior tile and it marks the line where wet boots and salt are meant to stop. Confirm every exterior sill on the same visit as the moisture test.
A washing machine on oak needs a raised drain pan. A supply-line leak otherwise sits on the floor for hours. With that pan, engineered European white oak performs well in most residential laundry rooms. Without it, the laundry leak is the reason to keep oak out from under the machine.
